Kate Laity This new EP hasn’t left my car since I got it. This is so right for this moment in so many ways, starting with the title song. It’s hard to improve on The ‘Oo but this version hits the right balance between homage and innovation. The guitar sound offers a jangly mid-60s authenticity but the sweeter backing vocals reveal a complexity to the gender confusion that makes it feel entirely up to date...

Something 02:38
Today I found out something I wish I didn’t know but I can’t go back, no, I can’t go back. I almost went off somewhere I didn’t mean to go, now that gate’s already closed. Why did you falter? Why? It makes me want to bury my head in the summer sand but I can’t go back, no, I can’t go back. I wanted to show you pretty things that weren’t mine to lend, so they can’t be yours to have. I dreamed I was younger, a babe in the woods. We were innocent creatures— nothing but good. Examining closer a hole in your wall— what could become of this, after all?

I was tied to the rails by Calvary's cross, defeated and deranged and left for dead. I rose from the grave of the life that I'd left defeated and deranged. There were people standing on every corner in town, and those who were hidden in the bushes. Now the fire never ceases, the clouds never part to reveal the sky at large. I heard echoes in the hills of the ones who survived, who wrote what they knew and stuck to it. I hovered in a cave a philosopher drew and spoke of Socrates. That's how I do it. There's nothing, there's nothing to it. Between the air and the wall there is infinite space. There is a limit that that can never be reached going half of the distance from here to the door for those who studied calculus. That's how we do it, there's nothing, there's nothing to it. There's nothing, there's nothing to it Merrily we roll along or hide in the woods. Yea, verily we watch the shadows fall until there’s nothing, nothing at all. Nothing, nothing at all. Outside the windows, we watch the shadows crawl. I heard echoes in the hills of the ones who survived, who wrote what they knew and stuck to it. I hovered in a cave a philosopher drew and spoke of Socrates. That's how I do it. There's nothing, there's nothing to it.

Boylesque 03:43
What’s written in the space left blank at the bottom of the page? A view of the future hidden away. Scrolling through pages of perfect boylesque faces. Showing only aces wrapped in brocade and lace. Heavily kohled eyes, he flashes a thigh. He promises to wear the same thing tomorrow. He doesn’t know I’ll do the same thing tomorrow, tomorrow, and tomorrow. Turning everything around is the specialty of the house. Ooh... Ooh... Heavenly cold eyes, he flashes a smile. He promises to say the same thing tomorrow. He doesn’t know I’ll do the same thing tomorrow, tomorrow, and tomorrow.

M.K. 04:38
You could never pay attention enough to get a read on me when there’re too many things to say, too many things to say today. Your tongue might get blistered, though in your defense, you don’t know what I meant when I said what I said. I might let go. I might let go. I might let go-- come on and get me. There’s a dream within a dream and my eyes are open wide, my hands stuck to my sides, knowing we’re gonna die. A dream within a dream, from when I wasn’t feeling great, in fact I felt like hell, crawlin' out of the well. I might let go. I might let go. I might let go-- come on and get me. I wasn’t happy as a child. When on Halloween a neighbor saw me smiling, it was the mask that freed me, if you get my meaning. I might let go. I might let go. I might let go-- come on and get me.
