Chipped Fingernails
© 2019 Lys Guillorn (Little Wren / BMI)

I went outside
and I didn’t even wear a coat
so this is the song that I wrote
when I didn’t have a thing to say.

Chipped fingernails
snag on my dirty jeans.
This time last year
I almost quit the scene.

When I arrive,
I plug in and play
and I begin my day.
I repeat one and two
‘cause that is what I do,
and every now and then I stop
when I’m thinking about what to say,
when I’m dreaming about what to sing,
when I’m thinking about what to say.

A bird calls out,
I key into my house
and open up my mouth
‘Til I go north or south,
that’s what I’ll crow about.
I repeat one and two
‘cause that is what I do
and every now and then I...
backward and forward I go
turn over the page,
begin again.

That’s what I do when I’m transforming (words).
